Since several updates have been roll out from the search engine giant, this time; Google announcement on URL length say it does not matter in ranking. 

If you been following on Google algorithms you’ll discover amazing upgrade overtime. 

These upgrade is making many website making a lot of adjustment. 

To meet Google standard or web content ranking. You know why?  Organic ranking still works and it helps company WebPages show on SERPs by customers and clients organically over a period of time.  

 John Mueller answer about this question give confidence to those having long URL strong confidence about the whole stuff. From the new video tag #AskGooglebot. 

However, the length shouldn’t exceed 1000 characters. If you keep it shortens or moderate it will look more comprehensive.  

From my point of views. Even Mueller said if a website happens to have 3 URLs version Google will choose the shorter and cleaner version.

When we say URL it simply means Uniform Resource Locator. That includes the domain name of a website alongside other address. 

It is use to identify webpage or address of a certain web article shown on the internet. 

From world wide web(www) to domain by the help of website browser like Google Chrome, Firefox, Brave browser, Opera mini and the rest.  

When you or others type the URL of your website.

Basic example: https://www.myname.com/webarticle this is short URL the while long one is 

https://www.myname.com/new-web-article-from-my-industry-to-everyone-who-wants-it-today

You can get URL of webpage base on the page title you choose. Long title get long URL while short tile generates short URL.

 As a matter of fact URL is part of domain name because it contains the complete website address.  

Many CMS generates duplicates home URLs that seems to help displays website in multiple variations. 

What search engine does is to pick canonical version and make it public.

From John Mueller explanation, it becomes very obvious that Google don’t consider URL length  as ranking factor at all. Don’t forget, your content is what most likely matters.

How Does It Apply On Webpage?   

When you type the URL or (webpage link) as popularly called into a browser. It shows the resource from whence it came from and search engine finds the location from the domain or website pages.

According to Moz, the canonical tag tells search engines which version of a URL you want to appear in search results.
